Confocal fluorescence micrograph of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in the fibrous cap of a human chronic atherosclerotic plaque. Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) accumulation is visible in fibrous cap VSMCs. The image shows multi-panel staining including alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) labeling the spindle-shaped VSMCs and lipid droplet staining identifying lipid-overloaded cells within the fibrous cap.
