Volume electron microscopy of human foveal retina from adult donor. Vertical section through the foveal center showing the foveal pit (asterisk), photoreceptor cell bodies and outer segments (inner and outer nuclear layers), and the distinctive cone-rich foveal architecture. Serial automated tape-ultramicrotomy SEM. (Homo sapiens; Figure S1.)

Human foveal retina volume EM: Müller cell cone and retinal neurons in the foveal avascular zone. Vertical section showing cone photoreceptor cell bodies (inner nuclear layer), connecting cilia, and outer segment bases. Müller glia processes ensheathing cone somata are visible. Adult human donor born pre-term. (Homo sapiens; Figure 1.)

Measurement of human rod photoreceptor outer segment pH with BCECF, a ratiometric pH-sensitive dye. Images show isolated human rod photoreceptors, which include an inner and outer segment. The outer segment (OS) contains the stack of membranous discs with visual pigment; the inner segment (IS) contains mitochondria. BCECF fluorescence is excited at 495 and 440 nm and measured above 515 nm. Human donor retina. (Homo sapiens; Figure 4.)

Lipofuscin fluorophore precursors in the outer segments of isolated human rod photoreceptors. (A) Nomarski differential interference contrast image and (B) true color fluorescence image (excitation 450–490 nm) showing autofluorescence emitted by an isolated human rod photoreceptor. The outer segment (OS) and inner segment (IS) are clearly distinguishable. Lipofuscin fluorophore precursors accumulate in the outer segment as all-trans retinal is not fully reduced by the retinoid cycle. Human donor retina. (Homo sapiens; Figure 7.)
