Scanning electron microscopy images of the human pineal gland using a modified freeze-fractured sample procedure. (A, B) Pinealocytes (Pi) with round or elongated shape, with short expansions (arrowheads) directed toward adjacent cells. The most numerous cellular phenotype, they are grouped in clusters (Ca) surrounded by stromal/interstitial cells. Scale bar approx. 10 μm. (human (pineal gland); Figure 1, A, B.)

Human pineal gland histology showing age-related variability in lobular organisation. The parenchyma is composed primarily of pinealocytes — large, pale-staining cells with round nuclei and sparse cytoplasm arranged in lobules separated by fibrovascular septa. Astrocytes are interspersed throughout the lobules. Three types of lobular organisation (intact, partially intact, disrupted) can be seen across different regions. H&E and Mallory staining. (human (pineal gland, post-mortem); Figure 1, a.)
