Peripheral blood smear of a seven-year-old male child showing nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs / normoblasts). Nucleated red cell precursors visible in peripheral blood indicate marked erythroid stress and extramedullary erythropoiesis. (human (peripheral blood, child with hemolytic anemia); Figure 1.)

Blood film of case 3: The smear demonstrates normochromic normocytic RBCs with polychromatic macrocytes, normoblasts, schistocytes, and irregular contracted cells. (human (neonatal peripheral blood, infantile pyknocytosis); Figure 6.)

Peripheral blood smear showing nucleated erythroid precursors (normoblasts) with perinuclear iron granules, confirming ring sideroblast morphology. The nucleated red cell precursors are visible with a round-to-ovoid nucleus, basophilic cytoplasm, and characteristic iron granule deposits encircling the nucleus. The surrounding mature erythrocytes are smaller anucleate biconcave discs by comparison. (human (peripheral blood, ring sideroblastic anemia); Figure 2, a-b.)

Peripheral blood smear from case 3 of infantile pyknocytosis. The smear shows normochromic normocytic RBCs with nucleated red blood cells (normoblasts, i.e., erythroblasts), polychromatic macrocytes, schistocytes, and irregularly contracted cells. Pyknocytes are indicated by blue arrows. Wright-Giemsa stain. (human (neonate, infantile pyknocytosis); Figure 6.)
