Electron microscopy of renal biopsy showing massive mesangial and subendothelial electron-dense deposits at magnification ×7000 in a patient with rapidly progressive IgA nephropathy and systemic lupus erythematosus. Mesangial cells and mesangial matrix are visible alongside the dense immune deposits. (human (kidney biopsy, IgA nephropathy/SLE); Figure 3.)

PAS stain of renal biopsy showing glomerular enlargement with mesangial expansion in a patient with FN1 fibronectin nephropathy. Diffuse PAS-positive staining with prominent mesangial matrix is evident. Mesangial cells are highlighted by the expanded mesangial compartment. (human (kidney biopsy, fibronectin nephropathy); Figure 1, A.)

Renal biopsy in focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) showing glomerular pathology and highlighting mesangial cells. Panel A (light microscopy): the glomerular tuft shows adhesion to Bowman's capsule with early podocyte foot-process effacement. Mesangial cells — stellate or triangular cells with oval nuclei occupying the mesangium (the stalk between glomerular capillary loops) — are visible alongside mesangial matrix. The remaining glomerular segments appear largely intact. Additional panels show immunofluorescence and electron microscopy findings. (human (kidney, FSGS); Figure 2, A-C.)

PASM (periodic acid-silver methenamine) stain of a human renal biopsy at ×400 magnification showing a glomerulus with mesangial cells and mesangial matrix in the context of early-stage focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Adhesion of the glomerular tuft to Bowman's capsule is visible (red arrow). (human; Figure 1, A.)
