Peripheral blood smear showing sickled erythrocytes (drepanocytes) consistent with hemoglobin SS sickle cell disease. Characteristic crescent-shaped or elongated sickle-form red blood cells visible among normal erythrocytes. (human (peripheral blood, sickle cell disease HbSS); Figure 1.)

Peripheral blood smear (x1000 magnification) showing sickle cells constituting 4% of all erythrocytes in a patient with hemoglobin sickle-beta-thalassemia (HbSbeta+). Drepanocytes (sickle-shaped RBCs), hypochromic microcytes (beta-thalassemia component), and target cells visible. (human (peripheral blood, hemoglobin sickle-beta-thalassemia); Figure 3.)

Peripheral blood smear showing sickled erythrocytes consistent with hemoglobin SS sickle cell disease in a patient presenting with aplastic crisis triggered by Parvovirus B19. No schistocytes or other abnormal red cell morphologies noted. Wright-Giemsa stain, 1000x magnification. (human (peripheral blood, sickle cell disease HbSS); Figure 1.)

Peripheral blood smear showing marked anisopoikilocytosis with sickle cells (drepanocytes) in a patient with sickle cell-beta thalassemia. Elongated, crescent-shaped erythrocytes characteristic of haemoglobin S polymerisation are visible alongside target cells and other poikilocytes. (human (peripheral blood, sickle cell-beta thalassemia); Figure 3.)

Peripheral blood smear from a patient with compound heterozygous sickle cell-beta thalassaemia. The smear shows microcytic hypochromic red blood cells with marked anisopoikilocytosis. Sickle cells (drepanocytes) are visible as elongated, curved erythrocytes tapering at both ends. Target cells (codocytes), teardrop cells (dacryocytes), and occasional schistocytes are also present, reflecting the combined haemoglobin S and beta-thalassaemia pathology. Wright-Giemsa stain. (human (sickle cell-beta thalassaemia); Figure 3.)
