Peripheral blood smear from a patient with primary myelofibrosis showing (A, left box) a nucleated erythrocyte (normoblast) and (B, right box) a teardrop-shaped erythrocyte (dacryocyte). Dacryocytes have an elongated teardrop shape with one rounded and one pointed end, forming when erythrocytes are deformed while being squeezed past fibrous tissue in the bone marrow. Wright-Giemsa stain. (human (primary myelofibrosis); Figure 2, A-B.)
