Transmission electron micrographs showing the epithelial surface not involved by laser incision and the deep corneal stroma of the CTRL (A–C) and the RHD (D–F) cornea. ep denotes epithelium; st, stroma; and k, keratocyte. Scale bar: (A,D) 2 μm; (B,E) 1 μm; and (C,F) 5 μm. (human (donor cornea, control); Figure 4, CTRL panels (A, B, C).)

In vivo confocal microscopy of the corneal stroma showing activated keratocytes with abnormal hyperreflectivity in a patient with Sjogren's syndrome. Keratocytes appear as stellate cells with bright cell bodies and processes within the stromal lamellae. (human (corneal stroma, Sjogren's syndrome context); Figure 1.)

Confocal microscopy of the cornea of a 38-year-old human female showing all major layers. (A) Superficial epithelium with flat, polygonal cells. (B) Basal epithelium with columnar cells. (C) Sub-basal nerve plexus in Bowman's layer. (D) Anterior stroma with keratocytes. (E) Posterior stroma. (F) Endothelium showing the characteristic hexagonal mosaic pattern. Scale bar applies to all panels. (Homo sapiens; Figure 5.)

Specular microscopy of human corneal endothelium showing endothelial cell density (ECD) measurements before and after phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation. The characteristic hexagonal mosaic of corneal endothelial cells is visible. Scale bar and cell count annotation shown in the automated analysis overlay. (Homo sapiens; Figure 1.)

Dramatic differences in collagen fiber structure between human and domestic mammal corneas. A Bowman's layer is present in humans (absent in dogs and rabbits). The human corneal stroma shows highly organized orthogonally-arranged collagen lamellae. Note the distinct Bowman's layer at the anterior surface in the human section and the differences in collagen fibril diameter and lamellar organization. (Homo sapiens; Figure 10.)
