Phenotypic validation of hBM-MSC-derived chondrocytes following chondrogenic differentiation. Human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs) were differentiated using a 28-day three-dimensional chondrogenic induction protocol. Validation panels include Alcian blue staining, collagen type II (COL2A1) immunofluorescence, and SOX9 immunofluorescence. Transmission electron micrograph of human articular cartilage chondrocytes in a 3D collagen sponge scaffold (non-loaded control group). The chondrocytes show a large number of autophagosomes and lysosomes in the cytoplasm. The round cell body characteristic of chondrocytes is visible with abundant endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. Cells are surrounded by pericellular matrix of collagen fibrils.
